NMSU Bookstore
Las Cruces, New Mexico
New Mexico State University and Antunovich Associates collaborated on a new LEED Silver Level certified two-story 45,000 square foot “Town and Gown” bookstore in Las Cruces, New Mexico. 35,000 square feet of the building will hold the actual bookstore program managed by Barnes & Noble College Booksellers. The remaining 10,000 square feet will be comprised of 2,500 square feet of other retail and 7,500 square feet of University offices.

The building is reminiscent of other historical buildings in the surrounding areas while establishing a strong retail presence and connection to the surrounding community. The design of the New Mexico State University Bookstore building showcases a central 2 story open atrium with translucent skylight punctuated by an actual tiger moth biplane painted in full NMSU regalia to promote the rich aeronautic history of the region. While the bookstore’s main focus is to provide the resources required by the student body it also functions as a vibrant hub for the community on a whole. A Starbucks Café is incorporated into the bookstore complete with a custom built outdoor fireplace. In addition, the layout of the bookstore provides for 2 informal reading lounges complete with built in wooden blinds, fireplaces, and audio video support for guest lecturers, musical performances, and community support groups.

The building itself serves as the new gateway into New Mexico State University from the town of Las Cruces, and establishes the initial phase of the much anticipated 2010-2016 University Master Plan Vision. With its robust presence at the corner of Jordan Road and University Avenue the New Mexico State Bookstore inspires a strengthened synthesis of the university and community.
