Serving as the gateway into New Mexico State University from the town of Las Cruces, the NMSU Bookstore inspires a strengthened synthesis of the university and community. This LEED Gold Level certified, two-story, “Town and Gown” building was designed to be reminiscent of other historical buildings in the surrounding areas while establishing a strong retail presence and connection to the immediate community. It also set the initial phase of the much anticipated 2010-2016 University Master Plan Vision.
The design showcases a central two-story open atrium with a translucent skylight punctuated by an actual tiger moth biplane painted in full NMSU regalia to promote the rich aeronautic history of the region. While the bookstore’s primary focus is to provide the resources required by the student body, it also functions as a vibrant hub for the community on the whole with the help of 2,500 SF of additional retail space and 7,500 SF of university offices.
The bookstore includes a Starbucks Café, complete with a custom-built outdoor fireplace. The bookstore layout also provides two informal reading lounges complete with built-in wooden blinds, fireplaces, and audio-video support for guest lecturers, musical performances, and community support groups.
